It went through send well, and got some nice speed on the straights. Fun ride. </p>

I rode 2.5 miles from my house to Mitchell park. There I did some riding in the grass, weaving through some sidewalks, and just toured the parking lot. Afterwards, I started riding home. When I got to a particular stop sign, I checked my distance, which was 4.2 miles. Accelerating off the line was poor, and a little bit down the road, the bike was going a little slower than bicycling speed. This was when I hopped off, took the screenshot below, and then had to wheel the mini-bike home. So I would safely say the range is 4 miles on a charge, before you should worry about dying on the side of the road. It's not as long of a range as the gas engine, but I wouldn't consider the two comparable. I didn't burn any fossil fuels riding today, which I consider an accomplishment.<br />

So glad I finally finished. Everything is heavily secured to the frame. The wiring is pretty clean, but it peaks out a little just to show it off. I'm satisfied with the new top speed, 21mph. Here are some pictures of it in my driveway, and on a trail I took it on:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4oJuUEO5Sivpw0wuNMh3HI-Wx64hT1_iqkHvfN7wHbdrS-IZh-Z26auDZ22Wli5LpzvoxF0tu4PK5zZSHt6QwuSgwyLi6mGi4SrAwR7n4rqEk5QA92vVpKOUU4NsfQKO8F6uK_JipQH0/s1600/IMG_20130224_175523.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4oJuUEO5Sivpw0wuNMh3HI-Wx64hT1_iqkHvfN7wHbdrS-IZh-Z26auDZ22Wli5LpzvoxF0tu4PK5zZSHt6QwuSgwyLi6mGi4SrAwR7n4rqEk5QA92vVpKOUU4NsfQKO8F6uK_JipQH0/s640/IMG_20130224_175523.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Got some epoxy, and the aluminum supports so it became time to make a mount for the batteries! Started splitting wires and making connections. Got the throttle, motor, and key switch connected. All that is left for the project is mounting everything, and wiring the batteries and charger. But in order to wire the charger, I first need to determine which wire is positive, and which is negative. So, I will have to bring it to a friend with a charge tester, and finally buy some mounting brackets for the batteries. Hopefully I will be done soon. Here are some pictures:<br />

I spotted this beauty in the Publix parking lot in town. It is definitely conversion, with one single-gear, just like my bike. I think it must make a great town commuter, and I would have loved to meet the owner. Here are a couple pics: <br />

The shipping was fast, and all the parts arrived in tip-top shape. The motor is much smaller than I expected, just like the controller. It looks like I will have plenty of room in my chassis to fit all the parts. I did forget to order a charger though, so I bought one off amazon that should be here soon. In the meantime, I will be ripping the gas engine from the frame. I put my keys in the photo to show the small sizes.</div>

A 36 volt system with 1000 watts, which equals about 1.3 horsepower. But horsepower isn't everything. In terms of electric engines, torque is where they get their power, and the system I chose should be plenty fast. I plan on ordering on Monday, and installing as soon as possible. Getting the wiring down is going to be the hard part. Below is my order:<br />

We talked, and he turns out to have a past experience with building motorized 2-wheeled vehicles. So here is an interview we had!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: Good evening Justin, I'm glad we could talk!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Hello, Chris.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: So, lets start things off. Tell me about your
projects that you've done before?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: My first project was modifying a mountain bike to
accept a gasoline engine. It was a good learning experience and motivated me to
learn how to machine simple parts, weld, and also overcome a number of design
obsticals.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: My two most recent projects involved modifying a
Jawa 210 moped to accept a larger, more powerful engine and modifying a Honda
C70 Passport to accept a (again) more powerful GY6 type engine.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: So what first inspired you to add an engine to
something that as built to take man power?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: I bought an ugly scooter and decided to modify it to
go faster. I realized that this vehicle was limited by its design, so I decided
to transplant it on to a different frame. I also have a love of early 20th
century board-tracker style motorbikes, so this was an attempt to create
something that looked like that. Moreover, I just thought it would be awesome.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Also, pedaling is for suckers.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: Haha, that is very interesting. What types of
problems did you run into in this transformation?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: The largest problem I had was how to tansfer the
power from the engine to the rear wheel. The drive sprocket was on the left
side of the engine, but the bicycle's rear wheel sprocket was on the right
side. I ended up fabricating a jack-shaft transmission near the pedal area to
accomplish this and also get a more usable gear ratio.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: How much planning did you do? Was it easier to
encounter problems as they came, or plan ahead with what you knew?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: There was very little long-term planning. I wanted
to preserve a certain amount of asthetic appeal and performance, but that was
the extent of it.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: I'd more or less build until I reached a problem,
and then solve it.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Technical plans are largely useless if you don't
have the tools to make use of them.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: And, they usually go out the window as soon as you
reach a problem.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: So up to today, what problems have you had? Would you
say it is easier to build a vehicle around an engine, or an engine around a
vehicle?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: The engine is the deciding factor in most cases.
Especially with gasoline engines. Engine mounts and the geometry of the exhaust
system, intake, ground clearance, and the location of the power output shaft
are the designer's straightjacket.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Electrical engines are more forgiving because they
have no intake, exhaust or oil supply. Also, they can be mounted to nearly any
flat surface.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Wires are flexable and can be made to any reasonable
length, which definitely helps.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Electrical motors are also smaller and lighter,
generally.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: So you agree with me in the idea that electric
engines are a better option than gas?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Hah.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: It depends on the criteria<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: electrical engines are not without their problems.
I'd say, however, that for a 'first project' an electrical motor is a better,
easier idea.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: But the fact
that electric systems have a larger choice of charging options, wind power,
solar energy, and hydroelectric energy, does seem better than gas, correct?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: If it's an environmental issue, yes I absolutely
agree. Logistically, it's currently easier to fill a tank with gas than it is
to find a charging station.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: I'm hoping that society will move toward electric
vehicles and that public charging stations become more commonplace.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: You have a valid point there. Hopefully within the
next 10 years we will be more dependent on electricity and less dependent on
oil.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: We can hope. As it stands, the major limiting factor
for electic vehicles is the battery.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: The expense, size, weight, lifespan, and storage
capacity of modern batteries is not all together that good.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: That is where we are today. Lead acid batteries are
stable, cheap, and thus prevalent, but very large. Lithium power is a better
solution, with its much smaller size, but it is unstable, known to explode, and
is "broken", per say, if you drain it to 0%.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Ah, yeah. that's about accurate.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Lithium batteries like to stay charged, that's for
sure.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: Well, I guess this is the point in the interview
where you get to ask me any questions you might have.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: I'm unprepared :(<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: haha<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: I don't think i really have any.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: That what I wanted to hear!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: Oh, just a few tips for your project... make sure
that the sprocket on the motor's drive shaft is aligned with the sprocket on
the rear wheel. If it's not, it's a good way to throw a chain. Also, don't
design it to have a tight chain, as is... try to engineer in a chain tensioner
instead. maybe rip one off of a bicycle.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: hard learned lessons, believe me<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: haha<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: Actually, when I bought my frame, it was designed with
a tensioner, which was a real plus.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: excellent<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: chains stretch over time, so it's a must... unless
it's like a motorcycle that has an adjustable rear wheel.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: that accomplishes the same thing. I'm assuming that
your's doesn't.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: well, anyway. email me if you have any more
questions or whatever.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: oh, what's the link to your blog? I haven't seen
your progress in quite a while<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chris: Thank you for your time Justin, and I will contact
you again if I need help.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justin: no problem<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was a good chat, and Justin is a smart man. I look forward to referring to him for help!</div>

So today, I picked up a donation from a customer of my Dad's landscaping business. She sold these Chinese scooters for a short period of time, and had these 2 scooters as parts donors. She didn't need them anymore, so she graciously gave them to me. The first thing I realized about these scooters is that the motors are centrally located within the wheel. Thus far, I have noted that I can most likely use the 12 volt batteries, throttle potentiometer, charger, and key start. The controller is configured for a dual motor system, so it's unusable. I also tried starting the mini-bike today. The bowl in the carb was leaking, turned out that the O-ring was put on backwards. I reassembled the carb, no more leaks, the spark plug was sparking and fuel seemed to get to the cylinder, but it still wouldn't start. My Dad and I will probably head down to the local lawn-mower shop tomorrow to ask for advice to get the engine running. I will update tomorrow if I make any progress.</div>

Keys would be so cool and secure to use on my mini-bike. Also adds to the realisticness of the whole idea of electric transportation.</div>

Here's the bike! The seller couldn't get it running when we got to his house, so I was able to run the price down to $160, which is a great deal for its condition. The frame was repainted, with minor scratches showing the old paint. Tires, brakes, and the seat are all pretty much new. After getting home and trying again to start the engine, I concluded that a gasket had blew in the carb, and fuel was leaking and not getting to the engine. The fuel was leaking on the frame, and in my garage. That's why I don't like combustion engines, you can't just flip a switch to get going like an electric system can. Anyways, I finally got my frame!</div>

It actually feels a lot bigger when you're riding it. The seat is very long, so you can really sit all the way back on it to be comfortable.</div>
